The Steps Our Law Firm Has Taken for COVID-19 Prevention
Scher, Bassett & Hames has implemented the following best practices for COVID-19 prevention to keep our clients and employees safe during the pandemic and beyond:
- Social Distancing – Since June, the state of California has mandated masks be worn in public and encouraged social distancing to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus. We are happy to comply. All employees and clients must wear face coverings and maintain at least six feet of distance from others at all times at our law firm.
- Sanitization Efforts – In accordance with recommendations from the CDC and the Labor & Workforce Development Agency, we have provided hand sanitizing supplies for our clients and staff to utilize while in our office. We have also implemented additional cleaning and disinfecting protocols to keep our office as sanitary as possible.
- Capacity Limits – We have taken measures to limit the number of employees and clients in our law firm’s office at any given time. By staggering out appointment times and restructuring our staff schedule, we aim to minimize the risks of COVID-19 being spread in our facilities.
You Could Qualify for Workers’ Compensation for COVID-19 Illness
California employers are required by law to pay for workers’ compensation coverage, which offers wage and medical benefits to injured employees as well as death benefits to the families of those killed while on the job. California Governor Gavin Newsom also signed an Executive Order saying employees’ COVID-19-related illnesses should be considered an occupational injury and are eligible for workers’ comp benefits if certain criteria are met. If you reported to work and tested positive or were diagnosed with COVID-19-related illness, you may be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. This law encourages employees who are sick to stay home to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks in the workplace. It also ensures employers are compliant with local health directives and take steps to keep their workers safe.
If you are unable to work due to medical quarantine or COVID-19-related illness (certified by a qualified medical professional), you may be entitled to short-term disability benefit payments covering up to 60-70% of your wages, depending on your income. If you are unable to work because you must care for an ill or quarantined member of your family, you may be eligible for up to six weeks of paid family leave. The Federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) also provides emergency paid sick leave for employees who have had to quarantine in response to COVID-19. If you have lost your job or had your hours reduced due to COVID-19, you could qualify for unemployment benefits or pandemic unemployment assistance for partial wage replacement. Talk to your employer or our experienced workers’ compensation attorneys in San Jose for more details.
